About Buddha Purnima
Buddha Purnima, birthday of Lord Buddha, will be celebrated on May 7, this year (2020). In May 1950, a conference, Conference of the World of Buddhists was held in Colombo, Sri Lanka and date was fixed as the day of the Full Moon of Hindu month Vaishakh.
Buddha Purnima is also known as Vesak Day or Buddha Jayanti. This festival marks the birth, enlightenment and death of Gautama Buddha. Buddha Purnima is traditionally is celebrated in Mahayana Buddhism to commemorate the birth of the Prince Siddhartha Gautama. Later he is known as the Gautama Buddha and founder of Buddhism.
This festival is celebrated especially in Sikkim, various parts of North Bengal such as Kalimpong, Darjeeling, and Kurseong, Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh, Bodh Gaya, Maharashtra and other parts of India as per the Indian calendar. But Buddha Purnima is not only celebrated in India, it is celebrated all over the world with same spirit.
The usual dress is pure white. Non- vegetarian food is normally avoided. A sweet dish called ‘Kheer’ which is made using rice and milk is prepared on this day of the festival Buddha Purnima as according to legend, Sujata, a woman, made Kheer and offered it to Gautam Buddha on his birthday and it's since become a tradition .
On this holy day, devotees visit Buddhist shrines, recite Buddhist scriptures and take part in religious discussions and group meditations. Devout Buddhists spend their whole day in temples. People gather at the monasteries with flowers and candles. They give them to the monks.
Some temples display a small statue of Buddha as a babby. The statue of Buddha is placed in a basin filled with fresh water and is decorated with flowers. Visitors come to the temple pour water with pure devotion over the statue. This symbolises a pure and new beginning. The festival holds special importance and is celebrated with full of enthusiasm and faith.
